Four-Stroke Outboard Engines
Four-stroke gasoline engines have long been a mainstay of the general marine industry. They have succeeded in reducing emissions and increasing fuel efficiency, and they have also been a hit with consumers. In fact, Mercury Marine has seen its four-stroke outboard sales surpass its two-stroke sales. When four-stroke outboard motors were introduced to the market, manufacturers recommended either their own specially formulated oil or an API SG or SL automotive oil. However, because the specific lubrication requirmeents of automobiles and outboard motors are different, it soon became apparent that four-storke outboard motors would require their own oil specification. This standard, entitled FC-W, was released by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) in August 2004. | Your engine "breathes" about 9,000 gallons of air for each gallon of fuel it consumes. The air over a body of water may seem clear, but dirt concentration can be very high. When air enters your engine, it brings with it many abrasive particles of dirt.
 As the dirt-contaminated oil enters the precision clearances between bearings and other moving parts, surfaces are scratched and gouged. Clearances are altered, and wear is accelerated to a point where irreparable engine damage can occur.

No full-flow oil filter can take out all oil contaminants, because a full-flow filter must keep the oil circulating. The AMSOIL EaBP By-Pass Filter traps contaminants down to less than 1 micron in size (about 1/100th the diameter of a human hair), leaving the oil free from virtually all wear-causing contaminants. It does this by tapping off the main oil line and filtering the oil through a special patented, ultra-fine medium. By cleaning the oil so completely, the AMSOIL EaBP By-Pass Filter prolongs both engine and oil longevity. The unique composition of the filter also removes water from the engine oil, safely storing it in the cartridge media, reducing the risk of rust, oil degradation, and the formation of corrosive acids.
How to "Forget" About Changing Oil
Location of the full-flow oil filter and drain plug in a marine engine often makes oil changes inconvenient.  The AMSOIL Dual Remote Oil Filtration System provides a solution to cumbersome and time-consuming oil and filter changes by converting an engine's full-flow oil system into a full-flow/by-pass oil filtration system. Previously the oil change intervals were restricted to 25 hours and the life of an engine was rarely beyond 500 hours before replacement. Hovertechnics, Inc. is a manufacturer of hovercraft and a proponent of AMSOIL 100:1 2-Cycle Oil. Hovercraft are vehicles that ride on a cushion of air. This cushion is created by a rotating fan which forces air down underneath the vehicle, lifting it off of the ground and propelling it forward. Hovertechnics use 48-horsepower Yamaha two-cycle engines to power their hovercraft. The engines must be kept running at 7,000 RPM to keep the proper air foil underneath the vehicle.
Hovertechnics had some problems with overheating and several engines seized up from the severe operating conditions. These problems occurred while using non-synthetic 2-cycle-oil, and soon Hovertechnics began looking for a lubricant that would protect their engines from the severe stresses caused by high PRM. They tried AMSOIL 100:1 2-Cycle Oil at the suggestion of an AMSOIL Dealer.
Hovertechnics owner Hugh Firminger says, "AMSOIL is an extremely efficient lubricant. Our engines have demonstrated an increase in midrange power output and better acceleration since we've switched to AMSOIL."
