Could you tell me why your automobile engine oil has advantages over another synthetic motor oil seller that claims you don't need to change their oil for 100,000 miles, and their oil filters will last for 100,000 miles? I am considering buying their solution and want to make an informed decision.

As for that other company, I can't say anything against them as the theory that they sell under that oil can last a long time is sound. AMSOIL does not recommend oil changes longer than 12 months, however, without oil analysis due to other contaminants that could get into the oil. If a used oil analysis shows that the viscosity is within specification, the additive level is at least 80% of new oil, and there are no contaminants (water, antifreeze, fuel) then the oil is good for continued use. Oil analysis should be done every 25,000 miles or once each year minimum. The oil analysis also allows you to practice "predictive maintenance" which allows you to monitor wear metal trends so you may see when something is wrong (or going wrong) within your engine and perform maintenance before there is a critical failure.

But filtration is a lot more important than what that other company represents. If you use AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filters, they are good for 12,500-miles or 6-months, whichever comes first. You can use any other good name brand filter, but you need to change at whatever that manufacturer recommends. Our oil will still go the 25,000 miles.

My personal experience and longest oil usage was 58,000 miles (1989 Ford Conversion Van). As it turned out, the oil analysis showed trace amounts of antifreeze components (mainly glycol and potassium) at 139,000 miles. I resampled to make sure there was not a mistake, and before the second sample came back I started seeing steam coming out of the tail pipe at startup (but probably would not have noticed if I hadn't been looking for it!). There was no loss of water/coolant from the radiator as the loss was so slight. I pulled the heads and had a cracked head gasket. Total cost was minimal compared to having to do a more major rebuild had I needed to replace rings and bearings. Serious antifreeze contamination (a couple of table spoons) can make motor oil turn into cottage cheese and fry a set of bearings in just a few miles. Should this type of thing happen with that other oil, they will not be responsible as it was a contaminant, not their oil that was at fault. But following their recommendation would not allow you to discover what is going wrong in your engine. 3,000 mile oil changes with conventional oil gets the oil and antifreeze out without damaging too much until the problem gets really bad. At this point you are wondering why your radiator is always running low but you don't have any visible leaks. By the time someone figures it out, you already need a rebuild. But unless you are using a supplemental oil filter that filters much better then any full-flow filter, such as the AMSOIL Bypass Filter, which filters 98% efficient at 3-microns (one pass), chances are there will be too much dirt (or other solids from air intake contaminants or combustion by-products via, blowby) for the oil to last much longer than the 25,000 miles.

The only real comparison, and a very big reason why I sell AMSOIL products, is they are the only oil company that publishes comparison wear testing, according to ASTM testing procedures, that names other oil company brands. If our comparison of AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic SAE 0W-30 Motor Oil, or AMSOIL Synthetic Racing Motor Oil, to Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil was a misrepresentation, would not Mobil be suing AMSOIL?

Also, I think you will find that even at our retail price of $5.85 per quart for our 25,000 mile/12-month oil, it is going to be more cost effective over the course of ownership. And if you have several vehicles or other things like a boat, motorcycle, or 2-cycle engines that AMSOIL can be used in, our Preferred Customer program can save you generally 25% off retail prices.
